The 50 Top Pizza venue where 1 in 5 calls ends in revenue
Il Caminetto, Moonee Ponds · Fork Time answers every call · July 2026, production logs
Il Caminetto is a family-owned Italian restaurant in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne: wood-fired pizza, handmade pasta, and a place in 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific 2026. In July, the phone stopped being a staff station. Fork Time answered every call, reservations, phone orders and catering enquiries, inside the same system that holds the reservation book, and handed the team only the calls that needed a person, with the context already collected. The staff stayed on the floor. Every number on this page comes from Fork Time production logs for this venue, measured over July 2026 unless a different range is stated, with each figure's base shown. The transcripts are real calls with guest details removed, published with the venue's approval. And the whole page is checkable in a way no case study in this category is: call the restaurant. Fork Time answers.

THE NUMBERS
In July 2026, Fork Time answered 540 calls, and nearly 1 in 5 ended in revenue: 14% became bookings, 3.5% became phone orders sent straight to the kitchen, and catering enquiries were captured on top. Reservations, orders and catering all land in the same live book the floor team works from, which is why a phone order carries its dietary note and a booking carries its guest history without anyone re-typing either.
When the AI engages a call, it finishes it three times out of four. Across AI-engaged calls in the venue's logs, about 76% were handled end to end with no human involved. The rest transferred, and mostly by design: large parties are handed to the team deliberately, some callers ask for a person, and some press 0 at the menu. A transfer with the context already collected is the system working, not failing.

15% of July's calls arrived while the restaurant was closed to reservations, and 1 in 5 of those became a booking. Il Caminetto takes dinner bookings from 5pm; guests call at 10:44 on a Tuesday morning anyway. Every one of those calls used to meet voicemail. The after-hours bookings on this page are revenue that structurally did not exist before the AI answered.
Show-up runs at 92 to 94% (April to August 2026), with no deposits enabled. Il Caminetto has never turned deposits on; its show-up rate is confirmation practice and clientele alone. We publish that plainly rather than crediting a feature the venue does not use.
FROM THE LOGS
The after-hours booking. 24 July, 10:44am, venue closed until 5pm. Guest: "Tonight, 5 people." The AI offers 6:15 or 6:30, confirms five at 6:15, and the confirmation text is sent before the venue has unlocked its doors.
The dietary correction. 31 July, 3:17pm. A caller orders a Capricciosa with no cheese for a lactose-intolerant guest, plus a Vegetariana. The AI initially notes both pizzas cheese-free, the guest corrects it, and the AI reverses cleanly: "Capricciosa's no cheese, Vegetariana normal with cheese. All set?" The allergy note lands on the right pizza, mid-afternoon, no staff involved.
FROM THE KITCHEN
LORENZO TRON · OWNERThe deliberate handoff. 2 August, 6:46pm, mid-service. "Can you take a party of 15?" The AI does not guess: "I'd pass that to our team, they handle larger groups," and transfers with the request already framed.
The garbled request. A caller's "43 people" resolves, through the AI's clarifying questions, into 4 people at 4:30, which is outside hours, so the AI offers 5pm. Messy input, correct booking.
WHAT THE OWNER SAYS
"Fork Time takes all our calls now, more than 500 a month. Reservations, catering, phone orders. We stay on the floor."
